Hang Gliding Certification

You have always longed to soar like an eagle. Now you can. You are already one step closer to achieving your Hang Gliding Pilot Rating.

Training times vary according to the student and type of conditions during training, but most students will spend between 5 and 10 lessons to obtain the first Beginner USHGA pilot rating. Typically, this takes between 3-6 months.

Demonstrate proper ground handling of equipment.

Demonstrate methods of establishing that pilot is properly hooked in prior to launch.
Demonstrate airspeed recognition and control during two predetermined flights to show smooth straight flight and safe, smooth landing, on feet, into the wind.

Demonstrate proper post-landing procedure.
Understanding the importance of proper care and maintenance of glider.
Read and understand USHGA statements regarding good judgement and maturity.
Pass USHGA Hang Gliding Beginner Written Exam.
 
Beginner Rating - Tow Launch - Required Witnessed Tasks

Must demonstrate mastery of all of the requirements listed above.
Demonstrate system set up and pre-flight for the specific tow system.
Must demonstrate understanding of normal and emergency procedures and the ability to recognize an emergency situation and execute the appropriate emergency procedure.
Demonstrates successful, controlled launches and flight under tow to release at altitude. Must show a smooth transition to flying, with proper directional and pitch control, proper tracking of the tow line and appropriate maintenance of proper tow line tension and airspeed.
Must discuss all Towing Discussion Topics with the issuing Tow Official.
